Revenge, a new TV series that premiered on September 21, 2011 on ABC, is loosely based on the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo. It revolves around Emily Thorne, a young woman who after 17 years has returned to her childhood home to seek revenge on those who destroyed her family. Revenge stars Emily Van Camp, Madeleine Stowe, Gabriel Mann, Henry Czerny, Nick Wechsler, and Josh Bowman.

Revenge was created and is written partially by Mike Kelley, who has also written and produced on shows including The O.C., One Tree Hill, and Providence.
One very important aspect to each episode is the table-read. During a table-read, all the actors read their speaking parts in the entire script. This reading is usually done "cold," meaning none of the actors have been able to rehearse their lines prior to the reading. This can allow Directors, Producers, and the rest of the creative team to determine whether anything from the script needs to be adjusted before production begins. Plot lines, dialogue, or individual scenes can all be adjusted before production begins. ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) is a post-production process in which the actors come in to re-record lines to improve audio quality (pictured). If an actor mumbles their line on screen or their line can't be heard because of environmental interference, they are brought in to make the scene more intelligible. After watching the scene, the actor attempts to recreate the performance as closely as possible. ADR is also used to record the main character Emily's voice-over narrations.

Revenge has often been compared to the popular 80s shows Dallas and Dynasty because of its soap opera-like drama. Creator Mike Kelley has stated that he wants viewers to be able to “get whatever they want out of the show,” whether that be the pleasure of watching the rich and powerful fall or a channel for fashion-forward escapism. Kelley feels that the show has reached the level of success that it has because its premise deals with the idea of control and how people have lost control of their lives and their futures. He says, “People's finances and jobs are disappearing, [there are] real hardships on the family, and they feel like they're not in control like they used to be. So they like watching somebody like Emily wrest control back from that 1 percent of the country that seems to be controlling everybody else.”

Although the story takes place in Southampton, New York, the show is actually shot in Manhattan Beach, California. Because the show is not filmed in Southampton, much of the show is filmed on a set surrounded by a green screen and the backgrounds are added in later. A crew is then sent out to the East Coast to obtain the shots of the Hampton’s background scenery.

The cast and crew of revenge is always very busy reading lines, shooting episodes, and editing film. Although the show’s episodes are shot relatively quickly, the show often has to go on hiatus so that the cast and crew can get ahead with shooting the episodes. In addition, the cast often goes on tours to promote the show. For example, on September 10, 2011, the cast and crew participated in PaleyFest in Los Angeles, CA.

Revenge airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on ABC. It won the 10 pm slot against other popular television shows such as CSI and Law & Order SVU. Revenge was the highest viewed scripted telecast in the hour since the ABC premiere of Eastwick two years before. The show has grown in popularity and is now being aired internationally. The show is geared toward the 18-49 demographic, and its ratings for the this age group has been steadily increasing since its premiere.

Revenge is often described as a guilty pleasure because it masterfully combines melodrama with a suspenseful plot that keeps the audience on the edge of its seat. Many people can relate to the central theme of revenge while the fanciful opulence of the main characters places a familiar theme in an interesting setting.
ABC has devoted a portion of its site to Revenge so that its fans can communicate with each other, watch full episodes, and keep up on the latest Revenge news.

The show has been met with generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Dorothy Rabinowitz of The Wall Street Journal praised the series, writing that "The arrival of one pure and unadulterated drama about a passion as old as man is something to celebrate. That's particularly true when that drama is as spellbinding in its satisfyingly gaudy way, as Revenge turns out to be.” He also praised Revenge’s main star Emily Van Camp for a "beguiling and entirely chilling study in revenge lust.“ Revenge was also featured in Entertainment Weekly’s January 27th 2012 issue. BuddyTV ranked Revenge #3 on its list of 2011's best new TV shows.Yahoo!TV also mentioned the series among the top television programs of 2011.

I have never seen this show before, but I automatically love the idea of reviving the classics on a mainstream medium. Using “The Count of Monte Cristo” on a TV show like this is incredibly surprising, considering that most Americans have either never read the story, or would whine and complain at the sight of an “old book”. I didn’t realize that the producer and writer of this show had been involved in so many other incredibly successful shows, like One Tree Hill and The O.C. I really appreciate that you went so far as to explain what a table read was (many people do not know what that is, surprisingly), but it would have been nice to see how the table read affects the production of this show specifically. Something I really like about this show is how it is open to viewer interpretation. That is something that is incredibly unique. I don’t think I have ever heard of that being done before! I was also surprised to know that most of the scenes were shot in front of a green screen. You would think that because they are filming in such a beautiful location, like Southern California, they would want to take advantage of the view!
Social Activity- Right off the bat I was surprised to learn that the creator of this show also worked on One Tree Hill. I think that a lot of people would be interested in knowing that. On the Activity slide you mention how the show often goes on hiatus, compared to other shows that usually film all the episodes in a 3-4 month time span and then air the episodes through out the year. I’m curious to know how this effects the show’s rating and number of viewers. I also found it interesting that you classified this show as a guilty pleasure. You had good support of this with the quote from the creator saying people “get whatever they want out of the show”. Personally I really like shows with similar goals because you can watch without being to involved unless you really want to be. Looking back over you CHAT map I thought that the show being based on a book is an interesting concept especially since that book is such a classic and its being interpreted in such a different way. I liked that your slides were black, I thought it helped to incorporate the sinister feel of the show to the slides. My only ideas on improving would be to introduce more of the characters and the focus on the show to readers in the beginning. Since I have never seen the show I was a little confused and could have used more guidance to understand the main plot and idea. Good Job!
From what I learned in your CHAT map the show seems to have a darker, mysterious feel, which your slides seemed to portray. I had never heard of the show before so your whole presentation was very interesting and kept me wanting to read more. However, I felt like you didn’t put much emphasis on the plot in your first slide and I’m not sure that I totally know what the show is about. I liked that through out your presentation you focused on how the show had taken off and how it had grown over the time it has been airing. Facts like the cast touring and the show earing the ten o’clock time show emphasized how much the show is being accepted by its audience. I liked what you talked about in your production slide because I don’t think I’ve heard of another show being filmed like that. I also liked how you linked Mike Kelley to other shows that are popular for our generation to know. The reception slide coupled nicely with the information you gave about the viewers. Having already acknowledging the viewing audience and how it had grown I thought it was a good choice to talk about the critics in the reception slide. Overall your presentation was well organized and was very interesting to read.
Samantha, I liked your CHAT map a lot. I’ve never seen the show Revenge, but the fact that it has a plot that resembles the Count of Monte Cristo is intriguing. I thought it was interesting that the show uses additional dialogue recording. On the one hand, I think audience members appreciate that the show wants everything to be heard and not blocked out by environment interference. However, I feel like when I’m watching the show I would constantly be going, “I wonder if they had to use ADR there.” I don’t know, maybe that’s just me. I think it’s interesting that the show could be both a contempory soap opera and a murder mystery; I suppose that helps draw all different types of viewers. I like the ecology section, I think it’s interesting how much the show cares that it actually looks like it’s in New York so they use a green screen around the set. You should’ve gone into greater detail in a couple sections, including Activity where you should have described what Paley Fest is. I also think it would have been nice if you included more background in the beginning. Overall, though, I thought was CHAT map was very well, done. Good job!

Social activity – I have got to admit that I was intimated when I first opened up your CHAT map. The combination of the word revenge with the dusk/sunset background immediately built the impression that this film was no joke and is quite a serious show. This is a great way to start off your presentation because I know what to expect about the plot of the show. In the production slide I loved how you described the use of table-reading to perfect script. However, I feel that you focused too much on this fact and left out other important production aspects such as where is the show is produced, and who pays for its production. I like how you described the scenery of the show based on its location in Manhattan Beach but the show’s plot takes place in South Hampton! The socialization slide excellently conveys the purpose of the film as a plot with no real theme! I find myself falling into watching shows like these for their entertainment factor even though there is to spiritual enlightenment, so to speak. However, I feel that you could discuss more about the interactions between the cast members and director and whether or not there is a cast influence upon the show’s production. Furthermore, I think that you discuss more about the conception of the idea for this show. By providing this information, those reading your CHAT map, could get a better idea of the social interactions taking place between people in the creation of this text.
I have never seen Revenge before, but it seems like a very intriguing show. I really like how you included the “cold” reading of the script because it shows the techniques used by actors and producers to really see what they want or need to change in the script before really filming. I like how you made comparisons between the show and the lives of people watching the show. The quote by Mike Kelly really created the authenticity needed to support your main point. I like that you included that the cast goes on tours to promote the show and then provided an example. I would suggest that you include information about how they promote the show. Do they use merchandise? Hold conferences? I would have also liked to know if the cast had any part in the making of the characters or helped to write lines. Your title slide if very eye catching, but I feel that the other slides did not convey the same fire and a different format should have been used. Overall, I think that you excellently described the tv show, Revenge, and provided accurate details and explanations to show the popularity and making of the show. Good job!
Right away I noticed two things when I went through. Your cover slide is very intriguing since I had never heard of the show. And the other thing I noticed is the the font on your slides is kind of small. It would be easier to read and look better if your font was a little bigger. Overall your content is good and you did a good job explaining the details of the show and how popular it has become. It has a very wide age range for an audience. I would have been interested to have more details on how the show relates to both young adults, and older ones. Maybe specifically which characters younger people identify themeselves with compared to the other people. Your CHAT map was good, but I think a few areas could use a little more explaination but you had lots of good details.
Great CHAT map! I have always been intrigued by Revenge but never had time to watch the show, although your CHAT map definitely makes me more interested. I love the fact that it is based on The Count of Monte Cristo! I think it's very interesting that the cast does a cold read of the script before shooting so that they can make any needed changes to the script. You did a good job of explaining how the creators make the show relatable to audiences by making some of the themes of the show similar to what is going on in our country right now, like the main character getting revenge on the “1 percent,” as well as how the show is designed so that viewers can get whatever they want out of it. I also like that you mentioned that the cast members go on tours to promote the show and interact with their fans as well as ABC dedicating a large portion of their website to Revenge so that audience members can interact with each other. You did a good job of including critics views of the show and stating that it was popular but you could also have included opinions of audience members as well. Overall though I loved your CHAT map and thought it was very informative!
Production- I really like this CHAT map. It did a great job of informing everyone about the show. This sounds like a really good show and something I should watch! I love the pictures that you chose. I feel like they are a good representation of the show, and they're just really cool. For this type of television show, the producer sounds perfect. I used to watch The O.C. and One Tree Hill, so I know he has to be an amazing producer for this genre. I like that you told us about the table reads for each episode. Its cool that they put so much work into putting the script together and making sure everything works well. The additional dialogue recordings also show much much work is put into the production of the show so that everything flows together nicely. It was surprising to learn that the show is set in the Hamptons, but shot in front of a green screen in California. It must be weird to act like they're outside by the water but to actually be indoors. Overall, this was a really good chat map. You gave a good amount of information, and it wasn't too little or too much.
I’ve always seen commercials for Revenge and it looks like an interesting show with a concept that I personally haven’t seen before. This CHAT map flows well together and I liked the way you set it up. I liked that in the activity section you stated that the cast films quickly and that they participated in a festival so the show had to go on hiatus. Because it is such a new show they probably haven’t had the chance to get to know each other better but by going to events together it shows that they get together outside of filming. I liked that you included in the socialization section that this show is considered some peoples “dirty pleasure” which shows that the show is well liked and that there are many reasons that people watch it. It was interesting to see that the creator wanted people to have their own opinions of the show and wanted people to believe what they want. While this CHAT map is very good there are some parts that could have been improved upon. For example, in the socialization section you could have added about information about the cast rather than information only about the people watching. Overall I thought this CHAT map was well done.
Production and Housekeeping – Having only seen promos for Revenge, I was interested to learn more about the show. I think that you did a great job of providing a lot of information about the show without giving away any of the plot line. While your CHAT map was a short read, it definitely included a lot of great facts about the show. I like that your slide layouts match the darker theme of the show. It’s easy to tell that you put a lot of effort into researching different aspects of the show. You did a good job of citing your sources, and I think that the bullet point text would be easier to read if the font was a bit bigger. Your production slide and description was really interesting. It was great to learn more about what else the producer has been involved in. I found the information about ADR especially interesting as it is something that I’ve never heard about before. Overall, I think this is a very interesting CHAT map filled with a lot of awesome facts.
Samantha, great job on your CHAT map. In the categories of audience and genre conventions, I felt you had many positives and few negatives. I really liked that you included the target audience of the show. I also liked your introduction slide because, although it didn’t include a lot of information, I was able to understand the overall plot of the show without getting confused with too many characters and different plot lines. As for genre conventions, I also appreciated the introduction slide to show that Revenge transitioned from book to television screen. I also like that you noted that the show is similar to a soap opera. It gives the audience that has not seen the show, such as myself, something to relate the show to. Some minor improvements could be made, but nothing extraordinary. I feel you could have included more details in explaining what fans of the show talk about on the website. Otherwise, great job.
I have never watched Revenge, but many have to check out a few episodes. It was interesting that the show did not have a more specific demographic than the general 18-49. That is a huge age gap and it does not cover gender. That is a huge audience ot try and capture. I understand that the show tries to get ahead of it airings, but believe that its constant hiatuses will cause it to lose viewers. The show seems to have an interesting concept like that of the Hills or a soap opera, just in prime time. The show is often promoted on ABC, but not with shows that are similar to it. I understand that the concept is to capture a new audience, but that is not highly likely during an episode of Castle. The show has some issues, but it is only in its first season. If it makes it to a second season then, in my opinion, it will make a bigger splash. It is hard to jump onto a show in its first season and then have it cancelled for no real good reason other than viewings. As with any TV series viewing means money and money means more episodes. I enjoyed your CHAT map and hope the best for this show.

- Presentation Notes
- Use of Citation
I like how the Introduction very quickly tells us about the TV series and how it's based on *The Count of Monte Cristo.*
I like the variety and placement of your sources. However, if you take lines directly from another website, you need to place these lines in quotes. For example, in your Production section, the part about the table read has been basically copied from the *Revenge* blog. Although you have the link to that blog, you also need to use quotation marks to show that the exact words are from that blog.
**Production**
- Describing how it's produced
- Acknowledgement of creators
- Describing the research done by the authors
I like how you've shown the many different aspects of production, from the ADR to the table readings to the Ecology of greenscreen. However, you'll need to quote the aspects of production which were taken directly from outside websites.
**Genre Conventions**
- Identifying the genre
- Describing the genre conventions
- Showing how these conventions are used.
I like how you've described this show in relation to shows like *Dallas* and *Dynasty* - this would be a good place to delve deeper into genre, to talk about which aspects of the show are soap-opera-like.
**Social Activity**
- Describing social and physical distribution
- Discussing cultural reception
I like the quotes from Mike Kelley you've included in Representation - this gives us a good idea of how he sees the show fitting within today's stressful economy. In Socialization, you've done a good job describing the "guilty pleasure" of the show, but I would recommend going deeper. What types of comments are posted by fans on the ABC website?
**Audience**
- Identifying the intended audience
- Discussing how genre coventions are used to attract that audience
- Indicating audience reception.
I like your inclusion of specific audience figures. To build on this, talk more about how these audiences have responsded to the show. Quotes from the ABC website could show us what individual viewers think of the show and why they watch it. Your quotes by critics are very effective in this regard, and this gives a good feel for what type of show it is and who might like it.
I have honestly never seen the show "Revenge," but it sounds really interesting. I really like shows like "One Tree Hill," so I might have to check it out! Great job on your CHAT map though! I really liked how you described the way that they produce the TV show, from having the actors/actresses read the script without rehearsal, and all the way to actually filming and revising the sound and picture. Genre wise, this TV show is definitely a drama. Because of this type of genre, the show probably draws in more of the young adult audience. Especially with the title of the show called "Revenge," it probably wouldn't be the best content for a little kid or an adult. The only thing I was really wondering was where the idea for the show came from. A lot of writers and producers base TV shows and films off of events of their own lives, and I was wondering if something similar happened with this show. That would be a little scary due to the content of the show that you mentioned, but if it didn't come from past experiences, I was just wondering where it did come from? I was also wondering if the episodes were available online? That really helps, especially with a new show, if you miss an episode. Overall, I really liked your CHAT map!
PRODUCTION: First off, I would like to say that your CHAT map is very visually appealing. The contrast of colors makes it very easy to read and the images match up well with the information on each slide. I have never heard of the show at all so it was pretty interesting to learn about a new television show. I liked how in the production section you mentioned table-read. I have never heard of that before. I'm glad that you included a description as well as a image to represent this process of production that usually goes unseen. Knowing that the producer was also a part of One Tree Hill and the OC is different because I feel like it shows that he is able to do a variety of genres, kudos to him. I also like how the producers use the current economic situation of the nation to get the audience to connect to the main character in the TV series. I find it odd that the show goes on hiatus so frequently. That must be be especially difficult for avid watchers that need to wait for extended periods of time for a new season to begin!
Audience-
I actually have seen a couple episodes of this show and thought it was pretty interesting. Anyway, I thought you did a great job on your CHAT map. Visually, I thought your presentation looked very good. The only suggestion I have is to maybe make the font on your slides a little bit bigger. Some people may have trouble making out text that small. Also, maybe you could add one more bullet point to each slide so they don’t look too bare. Other than that, I thought all your slides looked good and the pictures went along good with the slides. Especially on the title slide, I thought that slide looked really good. Anyway as for Audience, you did include the target audience for your show. Not only did you state that the target audience is anyone between 18 and 48, but you also supported this fact by saying the ratings for this show from this age group have been steadily increasing since the show’s premiere. I felt that your socialization slide actually backed up the audience aspect. The genre conventions of having a relatable theme and the idea of the show being a guilty pleasure go to definitely explain the target audiences age range. You met all the criteria for the audience aspect and overall your CHAT map was very informative.
Genre: I want to say, really good job on your CHAT map. I've seen commercials for this show but never actually watched it. In terms of genre, I know this show is as you call a soap opera / murder mystery. I think this genre determines a lot about a show's success or fan base. There is a more select group of people that enjoy murder based shows. And there is another group of people that like soap operas. I feel like the audience that is the overlap of the two has got to be relatively small compared to the rest of the television-watching portions. But regardless, it has to be enough to continue to be aired, so it says a lot about the quality of the show. Due to the genre, I would say this is a show primarily for late teens and young adults. All these audience details are determined by the genre, which seems to be a very interesting one. But, overall, fantastic job on your CHAT map. It is very visually appealing and does a great job of getting all your information across clearly!

I was very interested to read your chat map on Revenge because every time I watch shows on Hulu it comes up as a suggested show. I have been interested but never interested enough to watch, but after reading your chat map I might give this show a try. I like that you talked about what other shows it is like. This gave me a sense of comparison to see if it was something I would be interested in. I also enjoyed that you started with the backstory of who she is getting revenge on. I liked when you talked about the voice overs and how they do this. I never thought of this as an important aspect but now I realize how it is a key role in the production of a series. I also find it interesting that this is the third chat map I have read that talks about two sets to obtain the footage they need for the show. I also liked that you talked about how the show has an online site to keep fans updated. I think the amount of information you included was perfect. I did not like that you didn’t describe what Paley Fest was. Although this might have been a little extra information, it would have been nice to have. Lastly I did not like that your souces’ hyperlinks were before your information. I thought it was distracting and made the sources seem more like adds on the website. Overall I thought that it was a great hub.
